Describe the initiating process group.

The main purpose of the initiating process group is to get the project approved. It begins when a project sponsor or other project initiator proposes a project and the project is accepted through the project selection methods.

The main documents produced are the project charter and the preliminary project scope statement. The project charter addresses authorization issues and the preliminary project scope statement defines the scope. In this stage, the project manager is assigned and given a level of responsibility.

High-level planning begins to account for budget, schedule, business needs, project requirements, stakeholders, assumptions and constraints, risks and scope. An analysis of various stakeholders and their needs will prevent complications later.
